One of the most distinctive features of the Carnival Paradise, during her early days, was her status as the world’s first completely non-smoking cruise ship. This pioneering move was supported by various anti-smoking and cancer-prevention groups, signifying a commitment to passenger health and well-being. The ship proudly displayed “No smoking” signs on both sides and under her name on the stern.

Strict enforcement of the non-smoking policy was the norm, with severe penalties for violators. Passengers caught with smoking materials faced a hefty fine of $250 and were disembarked at the next port, with the responsibility for their transportation home falling on their shoulders. However, in December 2003, Carnival decided to discontinue this smoke-free policy due to revenue concerns, stating that non-smokers tended to spend less on alcohol and gambling compared to their smoking counterparts.

Weathering the Storms

The Carnival Paradise faced challenges on the high seas, including the wrath of Mother Nature herself. Scheduled to arrive at the Port of Long Beach, California, on September 20, 2004, the ship’s arrival was delayed due to a series of major hurricanes during the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season. As she sailed through the Caribbean and Panama Canal and up the Mexican coast, more hurricanes impeded her progress. Despite these obstacles, the ship finally arrived at the Long Beach cruise terminal.

The most noticeable change during this period was the painting over of the non-smoking signs, symbolizing the end of that era. While the smoke-free policy had come to an end, the Carnival Paradise continued to offer an exceptional cruising experience to passengers.

In 2018, the Carnival Paradise underwent a remarkable transformation during a month-long dry dock in Freeport, Bahamas.
