A vacation to the Caribbean ended in heartbreak for a couple from Norfolk after a tragic accident in Mexico. A former Navy serviceman and a nurse lost their lives in a motorcycle accident while on an excursion from their cruise. Reports indicate that Robert and Diane Baker, aged 72 and 62 respectively, from Norfolk, had taken a motorcycle for a ride after their cruise ship, the Norwegian Sky, had anchored near Cozumel Island. The incident occurred on a local road in Cozumel, with a bystander discovering the accident scene later that evening.
Their son, Sam Eisenhuth, shared from his residence in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, his memories of a loving upbringing, highlighted by shared television evenings and family trips. He recounted how his parents lived impactful lives, with Diane dedicating her career to nursing and his father being a proud Vietnam War veteran, a legacy that influenced Sam’s own decision to join the Navy.
The Bakers were enjoying their second sequential cruise trip, embracing travel and adventure, especially after their children had moved out. According to their son, both were experienced in riding motorcycles, with past experiences riding scooters and Robert’s history of motorcycle ownership.
In response to Diane Baker’s passing, Sentara Leigh Hospital, where she was employed as a nurse, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a valued team member and extended support to her colleagues during this difficult time, emphasizing Diane’s significant contribution to the hospital and offering condolences to her family.
The family is in the process of gathering more details about the accident through the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. The Bakers were also active members of the Real Life Christian Church in Chesapeake, where a service celebrating their lives was scheduled.
