In a startling revelation from May 2023, Jeremy Froias was apprehended following the discovery of a concealed camera in a public restroom on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, an incident that raised serious privacy concerns. This arrest was the result of an investigation led by the FBI.
Froias was charged with video voyeurism and attempted possession of child exploitation material, as indicated in legal documents. The FBI’s detailed affidavit revealed that Froias embarked on the Harmony of the Seas in Miami on April 29 for a seven-day journey with planned stops in St. Maarten, San Juan, and the Bahamas, before returning to Miami.
Approximately one day into the cruise, Froias is accused of installing a hidden Wi-Fi camera in a public restroom located on the ship’s top deck. The discovery of the camera was made on May 1, 2023, at around 7:00 p.m., when another passenger alerted the crew. Upon inspection, Harmony’s security team seized the camera, which contained a micro SD card. The data on the card comprised several hours of video files, revealing over 150 people, including at least 40 minors, being recorded without their consent.
Initial footage showed Froias setting up the camera and adjusting its angle. Further examination of the recordings indicated that Froias connected his iPhone to the camera using Wi-Fi.
The videos captured individuals, including young children, using the toilet and changing clothes, with some appearing naked.
Froias reportedly confessed to placing the camera during a security interview. He was arrested, and court records indicate the date of his apprehension. The FBI has since been actively seeking assistance from the public to identify the victims, creating a dedicated webpage for reports.
In the aftermath of this incident, authorities encouraged potential victims or those aware of victims to come forward. As of the latest updates, neither Royal Caribbean nor Froias’ attorney had provided official statements in response to these events. This case highlights the ongoing challenges and importance of ensuring privacy and security in public spaces, even in seemingly secure environments like cruise ships.
