*VIDEO* Watch This Retro Carnival Commercial from the 80’s with Kathy Lee Gifford!

In the vibrant tapestry of the 1980s, amidst the era’s hallmark flair and dynamism, Kathie Lee Gifford emerged as the quintessential face of Carnival Cruise Line, igniting a revolution in the cruise industry with her enchanting presence. Her role in Carnival’s inaugural national television campaign didn’t just mark a pivotal turn in her illustrious career; it also charted a new course for vacationers everywhere, myself included. Watching these commercials for the first time, little did I know that my avid viewership, fueled by a deep-seated love for “The Love Boat” and dreams of cruise directing, would eventually steer me towards becoming a dedicated cruiser in my later years.

Gifford, initially overlooked for the spokesperson role, became synonymous with the Carnival brand through her spirited portrayal aboard the original Carnival Celebration. This very ship, featured prominently in the commercials, was not merely a vessel; it was a harbinger of joy, a floating emblem of the ‘Fun Ships’ ethos that Carnival sought to project. At a time when cruising was perceived as a pastime for the elder demographic, Gifford’s vibrant promotions played a crucial role in dispelling this notion, showcasing cruising as an accessible, enjoyable, and adventurous experience for all.

The synergy between Gifford and Carnival catalyzed a seismic shift in the public’s cruising perceptions, propelling Carnival Cruise Line to the vanguard of the industry. The original Carnival Celebration became the stage upon which I embarked on my own cruising odyssey in 2005. This inaugural voyage aboard the ship that Gifford had so vividly brought to life was the first of many, marking the beginning of my enduring love affair with cruising.

Ironically, despite my youthful fascination with “The Love Boat” and aspirations of cruise directing, I could never have anticipated how deeply ingrained cruising would become in my life. My journey has been predominantly with Carnival, choosing to sail with them 99% of the time in my late ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s. This loyalty stems from a genuine affection for the brand, a sentiment kindled by those very commercials that Gifford so memorably starred in.

In 2023, I found myself aboard the new Carnival Celebration, a ship that pays homage to its namesake’s legacy while ushering in a new era of cruising luxury and innovation. This full-circle moment underscored the profound evolution of the cruise industry since Gifford’s days of singing on the original Celebration. Yet, the essence of cruising — the joy, the adventure, the boundless possibilities at sea — remains unchanged.

Reflecting on this journey, it’s impossible not to acknowledge the profound impact of Kathie Lee Gifford’s Carnival commercials. They were not just advertisements but a siren call to adventure that resonated with a younger me, dreaming of the high seas. It’s a testament to the enduring allure of cruising, a reminder of how a simple commercial can set the course for a lifetime of exploration and joy.

*VIDEO*Flushed Away: What Really Happens to Your Poop on a Cruise?

Setting Sail on the History of Cruise Ship Sanitation

The evolution of sanitation on cruise ships is a fascinating journey that mirrors the advancements of human ingenuity and technology. This narrative is not just about managing waste; it’s about adapting to the needs of thousands of passengers and crew, ensuring comfort and hygiene, while preserving the oceans these magnificent vessels traverse.

The Humble Beginnings – Chamber Pots and Communal Baths

In the early days of ocean liners, passengers and crew relied on chamber pots and basic communal facilities. Limited by the technology of the time, these methods were far from ideal. The introduction of basic plumbing was a significant advancement, bringing a new level of convenience and hygiene to sea travel. However, these early systems were prone to issues, especially in the rough seas.

Charting New Waters – The Introduction of Flush Toilets

As cruising gained popularity, the demand for better amenities grew. The advent of flush toilets on ships marked a milestone in passenger comfort and sanitation. But implementing these systems at sea was not without its challenges. The movement of the ship and the need to conserve freshwater required innovative solutions to ensure the effective functioning of these toilets.

The Vacuum Revolution – A Game Changer in Sanitation

The 1980s saw a significant breakthrough in cruise ship sanitation with the introduction of vacuum toilet systems. These toilets used air suction to transport waste, drastically reducing water usage and the risk of blockages. This technology transformed waste management on ships, making it more efficient and hygienic.

The Deep Blue Sea – Advanced Wastewater Treatment

Today, modern cruise ships are equipped with sophisticated wastewater treatment plants that mimic municipal treatment facilities. Biological and chemical processes break down waste, producing water clean enough to be safely discharged into the ocean. These systems reflect the industry’s commitment to environmental stewardship, complying with stringent international regulations such as MARPOL Annex IV.

Troubled Waters – Learning from the ‘Poop Cruise’

The 2013 Carnival Triumph incident, infamously known as the ‘Poop Cruise,’ was a turning point for the industry. The failure of the ship’s sanitation system resulted in a highly publicized ordeal for passengers and crew. This incident brought global attention to the importance of reliable waste management systems on cruise ships and led to stricter regulations and technological improvements across the industry.

The Green Tide – Environmental Concerns and Innovations

The cruise industry is increasingly focusing on sustainable practices in waste management. Innovations such as waste-to-energy technologies are being explored as a way to turn waste into a resource. Additionally, water conservation efforts and the use of eco-friendly chemicals in waste treatment are becoming standard practices, reducing the environmental impact of these floating cities.

All Hands on Deck – The Role of Passengers

Cruise lines are actively engaging passengers in their sustainability efforts. Educational programs inform guests about the importance of waste management and how their actions can make a difference. By participating in recycling programs and conserving water, passengers play a crucial role in the ship’s overall environmental footprint.

Sailing into the Future – The Ongoing Journey of Sanitation

The story of cruise ship sanitation is an ongoing journey of innovation and adaptation. As technology advances and environmental awareness grows, the industry continues to evolve, ensuring that the luxury of cruising remains compatible with the responsibility of preserving our oceans. The future of cruise ship sanitation lies in a continued commitment to sustainable practices, cooperation between cruise lines, regulatory bodies, and passengers, and an unwavering dedication to protecting our planet’s most precious resource – the seas.

(VIDEO) Riding the Waves: A “Beaufort 10” Adventure on the Carnival Legend

The Carnival Legend’s journey has been a testament to nature’s unpredictability. Following a pleasant evening at Chef’s Table, the ship’s sway left me pondering: was it the wine or the turbulent sea? The Beaufort scale reading of 9, escalating to 10, provided my answer. This scale, ranging from 0 (calm) to 12 (hurricane), is a crucial tool for understanding sea conditions.

The ship braced itself against the storm. Most of the perimeter, including the pool deck, was closed for safety. The chilly weather made the pool uninviting, and the closure of the hot tub underscored the situation’s severity. Sick bags, strategically placed throughout the ship, were a somber sign of the conditions. I noticed several passengers, possibly new to cruising, preferring to stay in their rooms, likely overwhelmed by the rough seas.

Here’s a glimpse into the Beaufort scale as experienced:

  1. 0 (Calm) to 3 (Gentle Breeze): Serene, ideal for deck walks.
  2. 4 (Moderate Breeze) to 5 (Fresh Breeze): Growing waves, a hint of adventure.
  3. 6 (Strong Breeze) to 7 (Near Gale): The sea’s power begins to unfold.
  4. 8 (Gale) to 9 (Strong Gale): Challenging conditions, the ship perseveres.
  5. 10 (Storm): Nature’s formidable display.
  6. 11 (Violent Storm) to 12 (Hurricane): The ocean at its most majestic and fierce.

For those struggling with seasickness, consider these remedies:

  1. Bonine Non-Drowsy Motion Sickness Relief: Effective against nausea.
  2. Dramamine Non-Drowsy Naturals: A gentle, natural option.
  3. MQ Motion Sickness Patch: Simple, easy-to-use patches.
  4. Reliefband Premier Anti-Nausea Wristband: Advanced technology for comfort.

Being a seasoned cruiser, I’ve been through a lot of this and much worse, but I tend to enjoy the waves. They rock me to sleep like I’m in a cradle. For others, it can be miserable since motion sickness isn’t just a physical condition; it’s intertwined with our mind’s perception and response to motion. Everyone experiences it differently. Why do some people get sick and others don’t? At its core, it’s caused by a conflict between what our eyes see and what our inner ear, which senses balance, experiences. This dissonance leads to the symptoms commonly associated with motion sickness.

To address motion sickness from a psychological perspective, certain strategies can be effective. Mindfulness and relaxation techniques can help. Focusing on steady breathing or engaging in meditative practices can reduce the impact of motion sickness. Visualization is another powerful tool; imagine yourself in a calm, stable environment to counteract the feelings of motion. Distraction is also key – immersing yourself in a book, conversation, or a movie can shift your focus away from the sensation of movement.

Adjusting your state of mind can be a practical approach to mitigating the effects of motion sickness, complementing traditional remedies like medication or acupressure bands.

Rocking waves are part of the cruise experience, and the more you can do to physically and emotionally combat it, the more you will enjoy your cruise!

Carnival Legend Christmas Cruise on Stormy Seas: Beaufort Scale 10 out of 12

(VIDEO ) Cruising Fitness: Start Your Day Healthy at the Carnival Legend Gym

Introduction: Fitness at Sea, A Vital Routine

For many, the gym is a crucial part of daily life, whether on land or at sea. Aboard the Carnival Legend, the gym serves as more than just a place to exercise; it’s a sanctuary for maintaining health and well-being while indulging in the pleasures of cruising. Starting your day with a workout sets a positive tone, allowing you to enjoy the rest of your day with peace and satisfaction.

The Top 5 Highlights of the Gym Experience

Variety of Equipment: The gym boasts a diverse range of machines and gear, catering to all your basic workout needs. Whether it’s cardio or strength training, you’ll find something that suits your routine.

No Waiting Time: Thanks to an ample number of machines like treadmills, you can easily reach your 10,000 steps without delay, keeping your fitness goals on track.

Carnival Legend-no shortage of treadmills

Impeccable Cleanliness: The gym’s cleanliness is noteworthy, with constant attention ensuring a hygienic workout environment.

Well-Maintained Equipment: Almost all the equipment is in top-notch condition, contributing to a smooth and effective workout. I only saw one treadmill and one weight machine that needed some attention.

Stunning Views: Exercising while gazing at the front of the ship is an experience in itself, adding a unique charm to your fitness regime.

Five Areas for Improvement

Aging Equipment: Some machines show signs of age and rust, indicating a need for upgrades or replacements.

Access Information: The gym is supposed to be open at 6AM. I got up early and went to the usual entrance, which is the Spa. It was closed. There was another couple that went back to their cabin, which is frustrating, since it takes a lot to get up and go the gym, in the first place. The signage should tell you to go to the 10th floor to enter the gym until the Spa opens.

Carnival Legend Spa and Gym hours of operation

Ventilation Needs: When the gym is crowded, the air can become stuffy, highlighting the need for better ventilation.

Limited Free Weight Space: The cramped free-weight area restricts the number of people who can comfortably work out simultaneously.

Cost of Additional Workouts: The high price of specialized workout sessions limits accessibility, suggesting a need for more free group classes.

A Fitness Journey at Sea: The Personal Impact

Despite some areas for improvement, the gym on the Carnival Legend plays a pivotal role in maintaining daily routines. The true testament to the gym’s effectiveness is not just in the number of steps or reps completed, but in tangible results. Remarkably, I managed to lose 1.5 pounds within just four days, a bonus that underscores the gym’s impact. This is especially impressive considering the indulgence in the extra culinary delights that cruising offers. The prospect of an upcoming refurbishment in April 2024 brings hope for an even better gym experience in the future.

Memorable Moments: Ending Workouts with Scenic Beauty

One of the unique aspects of working out on the Carnival Legend is the opportunity to conclude a session with breathtaking views, like the arrival in Nassau, Bahamas. Watching the iconic lighthouse and the distant Atlantis resort, against a backdrop of a bustling port, adds an unforgettable dimension to the cruising experience.

The gym on the Carnival Legend isn’t just a place to exercise; it’s a space that blends fitness with the joy of cruising. It’s a reminder of the importance of maintaining a healthy routine, even while indulging in the luxuries of a cruise. As you leave the gym, feeling refreshed and energized, you’re ready to embrace the rest of the day’s adventures with open arms.

As we set the course towards concluding this voyage through enchanting destinations, a word of caution for those eager to dive into these shores. While the allure of non-cruise sponsored shore excursions can be tempting due to their often cheaper prices, it’s crucial to tread with caution. Non-vetted vendors might not adhere to the safety and quality standards expected by many travelers. Moreover, unlike cruise-sponsored trips, the ship is under no obligation to wait for you if your independent excursion runs late, potentially leaving you stranded in a foreign port.

Opting for a more budget-friendly excursion can indeed offer more variety and might be apt for those willing to embrace a bit of risk. However, always remember to weigh the pros and cons, as sometimes, the peace of mind and assurance of cruise-sponsored excursions are worth the extra penny. Whichever path you choose, prioritize safety, plan ahead, and most importantly, savor every moment of your journey. Safe travels and cherish every adventure!
